Good book.Nice review art history and recency's.Good view about time modern art in USA between 1959-1975.
It's good news that this is available again at a sensible price; the asking prices on some original hardback editions of this are astronomical, as they are on many out of print Judd books. All of his publications containing substantial amounts of his writing ought always to be available for reasonable outlay, in print form and/or in E-form. This is a facsimile edition of the original 1975 book, made from scans of the original pages, and housed in a reproduction of the original yellow cover; thickish, softish card replacing the original hardback-board (which was cloth-bound, if I remember rightly). While this honours the integrity of the original, it means that the ink blots, areas of under-inking, typos (is Di Suvero's 1960 sculpture called 'Hank Champion' or 'Hankchampion'?), and so on, that occasionally blighted the type in the original are retained. Setting scans of the original illustrations within a new setting of the text, faithful to the original typeface and layout, would've eliminated the annoying blemishes (but would likely have pushed the price up). That's a half-star shaving minor moan, though (a number of the longer pieces from this are now available, newly typeset, in the recently published Donald Judd Writings). This contains much of Judd's best and most important writing, beyond formative from the off, since he seemed to hit the ground running as a mature, independent thinker and writer at record speed (His later writing is important too, although at times it's compact to the point of being gnomic, as well as tending to excessive reiteration). His show reviews are models of clarity and efficiency. To produce pieces so cogent, concentrated and concise must've taken a fair bit of effort, over and above Judd's natural nous; impressive, when you consider that he was always first and foremost an artist, and time spent writing about art is time spent away from making it.
This is the book that I have wanted, for it had been out of print for a long time.For students majoring contemporary art, this book is a must, that is the original source of contemporary art during the 1960s, including "Minimal Art: A Critical Anthology" ed. by Gregory Battcock.
