I was disappointed that there were not more images of outsider art. More to my dislike was the excessively academic tone of all of the essays. Usually in art book like this there will be at least one or two essays free of jargon, that enlighten the general art lover about the works/artists in question. No such luck here! And including images by artists like Cindy Sherman and William Wiley was a real stretch. Who would buy this book that doesn't already know about Cindy Sherman? One can't help but think that there must be many more real outsiders we haven't heard of whose work would be interesting to see. Not for everyone.

Lovely book
This is heavy book, both literally and figuratively. It appears to aim at being a definitive survey of “outlier art†and its impact on mainstream art and on the museum world. The 396 page book contains eight substantial illustrated essays, e.g., Black Folk Art, each reflecting a portion of the broad scope of the book, plus 277 color plates, (The plates do not indicate the size of the particular work shown, nor do they tell the reader where in the text the work may be discussed or mentioned.) Some essays are dense and academic, others are engaging discussions of some aspect of outlier art. While casual art lovers may not find such a scholarly book appealing, they will likely enjoy many of the numerous fine plates.
An amazing monograph that sheds light on a vastly under represented number of American Artists and how they added to the cannon of Art and Art History. Truly well made and designed book with wonderfully written and informative essays.This is a scholarly work, but has hundreds of great color plates accompanying that writing.
