I just read three books one after another about Esther, a total of one thousand forty-two pages. Esther: Royal Beauty by Angela Hunt, Esther the Queen by H B. Moore, and Esther by Rebecca Kanner. Each book obviously worked toward the same ending and had many of the same characters. Xerxes of course and Vishta the deposed queen (so called by name in two of the books) along with various eunuchs and servants, Mordecai who raised Esther and Haman the Agagite, evil and treacherous. Two of the books gave some accounting of the Battle at Thermopylae and then against the Greek armies, and though that was Xerxes’s headache it certainly had an impact of Esther. Hadassah was a Jew born of modest means, orphaned shortly after her birth and then raised by Mordecai and the name Esther was given to her by the Persians, the name meaning star in the Persian language or possibly in reference to Ishtar, a Goddess. Each book tells a different version of how she came to be at the royal palace and there is variation as to her passage of time there prior to becoming the chosen Queen and wife of Xerxes, no doubt each author expressing their literary liberties. Much of the dialog is very similar, almost verbatim, perhaps some bit of recorded history. Each book gives colorful descriptions of the opulence of royalty without discussion of the lack of today’s modern comforts, heat, running water, electricity, air conditioning and so on and so forth. It is widely acknowledged that Esther saved the Jews from certain extermination. She is portrayed as all that is good about a person, and this in a land where even today women are treated less equal than a pet. While I cannot recommend one book over another I can easily recommend each and all three and rate them each five star reads. Even reading back to back copies I was fascinated with each story which is to say it is a terrific story and a tribute to each author in their telling of the story.
Angela Hunt's "Esther" is the best retelling of the story of the Jewish queen I've ever read. I couldn't put it down. I know, you've heard that before, but let me illustrate. I'd checked out the trade paperback version from my library, and when I'd reached the middle, was summoned for jury duty. The paperback was too bulky to tuck in my purse, so although I already have many unread books on my device, I purchased the Kindle version for my iPhone and read during every free moment.Told from the points of view of the king's chamberlain and Queen Esther, the historical insights are fascinating. They add to the texture and believability of the story, while in no way slowing it down. Hunt builds steadily toward a riveting climax, including all the known historical events and main characters, showing each character's motives working to create a tense and moving story of love and hate, devotion and infidelity, power and weakness. Although I knew the Biblical story well, I found myself reading faster and faster, wanting to know what happened next. I think the reason "Esther" is so good is that Hunt shows the WHY behind the WHAT happened.Loved learning about the origin of Purim, the Law of the Medes and Persians, and other details of the advanced and opulent Persian civilization.I'd love to see a TV miniseries done for "Esther", along the lines of others they've done, such as "The Dovekeepers" or "The Bible A.D."."Esther" is enthusiastically recommended for those who loved Alice Hoffman's "The Dovekeepers" or the meticulously researched books of Mesu Andrews.
This book just stole my heart! This is the first book from Angela Hunt I've read and she's now become a favorite author to me. There's nothing like discovering a new great read.Historical Biblical fiction is a great genre. Often, these books are rich in detail and Esther did not dissapoint me at all. I honestly could not put this book down.Angela Hunt did a fantastic job of painting in this rich story and making it a delicious feast for the reader. The characters in this book felt like personal loving friends by end of the last chapter. There is drama, romance, Royal palace intrigue, beauty and so much more that will capture your mind and heart.I highly recommend reading the Biblical account of Esther from the Bible to help set the tone of your reading enjoyment. It will help to give you a true sense of the story. Then dive right into reading the book and the whole picture will come to life and leap off the page into your soul.Bravo Angela Hunt! Esther A Dangerous Beauty Novel is an EXCELLENT book and I can't wait to read the next to books in this awesome series! My Star Rating * * * * *
What Angela has done in this work is bring to life the history of a living people to this day. Nothing has changed. The world still seeks to destroy this "special people", this "Chosen people" of a God who really exists and watches over them. The story brings to life the immense power kings of old had. The power of life and death, the power to bless and to curse. Fallible men who did not always do what was right or just. Perhaps this is why God's chosen people sinned greatly when they demanded a "King like every other nation". Where selfish ambition and pride rule, the price paid by ordinary people is very high.Readers can assured of a story that will entrance as it describes the intrigues that surround an ancient monarch. Enjoy.
Really enjoyed this book as I do most all of Angela Hunt's books. So full of information and history and Biblical explanations, yet captures your heart and emotions and imagination too. Its amazing that Angela Hunt has so many different types of styles and book series. She must be extremely intelligent as well as amazingly creative. She's a workhorse too - because it is W.O.R.K. to write a book! I have written one that has done pretty well, and it was work and time!
